Taken from kayak on St. John’s River near Blue Spring State Park, Orange City, Florida.
The hawk curiously allowed me to get close enough for this shot. When it tried to take off, I saw why — it had a large water snake in its talons, but the snake had wrapped itself around the water hyacinths, tethering the hawk. He finally gave up and the snake avoided being a meal, though not without some injury.
