This female adult Pileated Woodpecker was feeding with its mate in woodland near the C&O Canal, at Swain’s Lock, MD. The shot was taken with a Nikon D80 and Nikon 300mm f4 lens with a 1.4x teleconverter, on the afternoon of March 5th. The woods along the canal are a regular haunt of woodpeckers. The woodpeckers were really hammering the tree with bark chips flying as they sought out food.

The photograph was taken by William Bulmer of Rockville, MD.
