Just a few days before Christmas, in the winter of 2010, my girlfriend, who worked in a chiropractic office in Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, called me from work in the middle of a windy but pleasant snowfall. She said patients had been seeing many birds eating fruit from a crabapple tree right outside the large picture window in one of the treatment rooms. One of the birds was very unusual looking and I should come over to check it out. So I did. And I found a bunch of robins gobbling up the crabapples in that frenetic way they do. One of them was all white or off-white, everywhere but its head, throat and nape.
