The Kalij Pheasant is found in the Himalayas of northeastern India and Bangladesh. Both sexes have red facial skin. Male has black upper parts and variable amount of white on rump and underparts. Female varies from dull brown to reddish brown, with greyish buff finges producing scaly appreance. Marked subspecies variation with males varying in color of crest and underparts and extent of pale bearing to upperparts. The voice is like a loud whistling chuckle. This bird is seen in pairs or small gatherings, spends a day on ground gleaning on forest roads and clearings during early morning and late afternoons. It’s a good flier and roosts in trees at night.
