This striking kite has a white head and breast with a chestnut body and black primaries. The sexes are similar but the female is larger. The juvenile is mainly rufus brown with head and breast that are heavily streaked pale, its underparts has plumage that is fringed pale. The tail is plain and brown with pale tip. Its flight is slow and loose with wings. In flight it shows roboust body, small head, short broad wings and rounded tail with pale tips.
This species seems to be retracting from the region while there appears to be a resident pair at Panipat and Karnal. There is no evidence of breeding, but there have been random sightings at Yamuna.
