Location: Floating Island Lake, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
During breeding season male yellow-headed blackbirds establish a territory, defending it from other males. Females create a nest commonly of cattails or rushes, in the territory of a male, who then mates with the females in his territory; sometimes one male will mate with 10 or more females. This image shows a male just starting his displaying behavior as he fluffs out his wings prior to extending his neck and raising his tail.
