Wood Ducks

“Red Raspberry, my favorite!” A Mama Wood Duck looks on as her three-week-old duckling nibbles at a Red Raspberry slime mold. As soon as they are born, Wood Ducks start feeding by pecking at moving objects that catch their eye: small objects floating in the water, insects, etc. So I can only guess that the vivid color of this fungus was what captured this duckling’s attention. The primary function of the Mother is to brood her young, keeping them safe and warm until they grow and mature enough to care for themselves.
