Although appearing black from a distance, turkey vultures are actually dark brown. As shown in this image, when viewed from below, the flight feathers are gray, resulting in a two-toned appearance of the wings. The bright red head, devoid of feathers, is a differentiating feature. Although most birds are believed to have a poor sense of smell, turkey vultures use their sense of small to detect carrion.
