The ‘Annual Gathering of the Kites’ is underway in Georgia. Flocks of Swallow-tailed & Mississippi Kites are gathering over pasturelands & hay fields of inland Georgia to forage for grasshoppers, junebugs, dragonflies & many other insects.

Swallow-tailed Kites breed in the river system bottomlands & swamps of the coastal plain. In late summer many move inland to eat the plentiful insects in pasture grasslands & hay fields. An aerial display that is captivating to watch & photograph.

The insect fat & protein prepares them for the long haul back to deep South America, where the insects are beginning to peak in the pasturelands & grasslands in the Southern Hemisphere summer.
