There are multiple morphs of red-tailed hawks. This image shows a bird of the western subspecies. Compared to eastern birds, western birds have greater color variation. The pale, streaked belly is characteristic of the most common morph. Except for the red tail, rufous morph birds have a reddish-brown chest and a dark brown belly.
