Location: Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, Sanibel Island, FL
This image shows a young bird (with red-orange eyes) near its mother (with yellow eyes). Although not evident in this photograph, other differences between adult and juvenile birds include light edges on the dark feathers (described as resulting in a scaly appearance) and a tan-puffy color at the base of the neck. These birds, as well as an additional chick which was positioned lower in the nest and not visible at the time this photograph was taken, are awaiting the male’s return with breakfast.
