Harlequin ducks tend to favor rapidly flowing, turbulent water such as mountain streams or rough surf. The male’s markings are striking with bold white stripes on the body matching the facial crescent and spot. The overall slate blue/grey color also provides a background for the chestnut stripes on the crown and flanks.
