Great Egrets

Great egrets commonly lay 3 eggs. Egg-laying is asynchronous, so the first chick is several days older than the third chick. Unless food is plentiful, the third chick frequently succumbs to starvation (the parents do not distribute food equally but preferentially instead feed the largest chicks), sibling aggression, or a combination of both. Although one chick is clearly smaller than the others, these parents seem to have been successful in providing adequate food for all three of their offspring.
