The golden crown evident in mature birds, makes easy to identify this sparrow. This is a non-breeding adult, so the characteristic bright yellow crown patch and black cap are not somewhat muted compared to breeding plumage. Golden-crowned sparrows breed in Alaska and western Canada but spend their winters in western Washington, Oregon, and California, occasionally migrating as far south as Baja California.
