Male (black mask) Common Yellowthroat
Masked Bandit of the bird world. Their hideout is dense, tangled bushes & grasses. Where they are constantly skulking & pouncing on insects & spiders of all kinds.
Common Yellowthroats are ‘common’ across a wide range of North American & Mexico. But not as ‘common’ as they once were. Overall population numbers are down 26% & some sub-populations in CA & TX are down 80-95%.
The main threat? Habitat loss & degradation. And, because they really like to be near wetlands, they are particularly vulnerable to bad water quality from persistent pesticides, other pollutants, and stormwater runoff.
