In November 2012, photographer Ethan Winning of Walnut Creek, California, was following a Common Yellowthroat as it dove into brush when movement overhead caught his eye. “I looked up and these two Bushtits were on top of the salt bush,” he says. “I was lucky to get two on a branch for as much as five seconds, and one in the typical upside-down feeding position.”
Ethan shot the photo at Walnut Creek Open Space, a network of city-owned natural areas that make up the largest municipal open space in California. He used a Canon SX40HS superzoom camera.
