The La Jolla, California Brown Pelicans are known for doing bill/head throws–
It is guessed that the reason the pelicans do this is to keep their gular pouches flexible and healthy. A bill throw happens very quickly–the pelican arches its back and throws its head straight up and sometimes over towards its back.
