The blue shoulder patches that give this duck its name are primarily visible in flight. While swimming, the more notable characteristics are the white crescent on the bluish-gray head, the buff-colored body with dark black splotches, and the black wings. This image of a preening male shows hints of the blue shoulder patch and the green secondaries, which are visible in flight.
