Black-crowned night-herons typically forage by standing still or walking slowly at the edge of shallow water. Although most feeding occurs primarily in the late evening or at night, black-crowned night-herons feed during the day in breeding season. The presence of the long streamers extending from the neck over the shoulder and part way down the back indicate that this bird is in breeding plumage.
