The Belted Kingfisher generally presents itself along waterways throughout the North American continent, is a pesky fidget, a challenge to photograph. It appears a “smallish” 11 inches in size perched, tense and alert, on a limb with a water view or on telephone or electrical wires. It grows in grandeur, however, when it takes flight on a 22-26 inch wingspread, speeding along and then hovering when it looks for a prey. Its dive, straight down into the water, more often than not, is rewarded with a fish. Alternatively Kingfishers will sometimes feed on reptiles, insects, crustaceans and mollusks.
