American Oystercatchers almost exclusively eat shellfish. This constrains their habitat to a very narrow zone of saltmarshes & barrier islands. A zone that is also a favorite for humans.

Interactions have not been good for the oystercathers. Global populations are estimated to be 74,000 & local populations are highly variable. They are listed by Partners In Flight on the Yellow Watch List.
