For years I’ve tried unsuccessfully to get a photo of a kestrel in flight. I’ve gotten them perched on wires or buildings, and I’ve witnessed them hovering over fields searching for prey, but always too far away for a decent shot. But about a week ago, I got lucky when I pulled into an area where I like to go for walks, and before I even got out of the car, much to my astonishment, this bird was hovering about 20 ft. in the air just outside my car window. Luckily, I had my camera with me and was able to grab a few shots thru my window before he found another spot to hunt on the other side of my car. Taken with a Nikon D7200 and a Tamron 100-400 VC lens @ 300mm, ISO 800.
