Location: National Elk Refuge, Jackson, WY
While adult coots are drab (dark gray body, white bill, red eyes and white shield with a red top), as shown in this image right after hatching the chicks are brightly colored with a bald red head, yellow orange around their neck, and bright red bills. This chick was being fed by one of its parents.
