Location: Point Reyes National Seashore, CA
This image shows an acorn woodpecker about to place an acorn in a “granary tree.” Some trees may have 50,000 holes. In Point Reyes National Seashore, the acorn woodpeckers use the bark of Douglas fir trees as their “granary tree.” Some of the holes used for storing the acorns (which are consumed during the winter) can be seen on the right side of the image. Since this photo was taken in early fall, only a few of the holes have been filled.
