This beautiful adult male Harlequin Duck is one of six that have over-wintered among the bridge piling and rocks at the north end of Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. Considered rare in North Carolina, it has been a real treat having this many of these small, colorful, diving ducks in our area. Many birders have come to see them, with very few disappointments. This bird was photographed with a Canon 7D and 100-400mm zoom lens, hand-held.
