Aka the Swinhoe’s Egret or Yellow-billed White Heron in English, the Chinese Egret is listed as a vulnerable species in the IUCN Red List. Its known population is only about 2600 to 3400 globally. A decade ago, it was still easy to see small groups of Chinese Egrets in Taiwan’s wetlands. Today, a lone bird like this one over a Taoyuon City’s seaside wetland is considered a lucky encounter by many birders.
