The American Avocet is a striking shorebird that can be found in shallow waters of the western United States. They are known for their long, thin, upwardly curved bills which they use to catch small aquatic invertebrates. During the breeding season, their distinctive black and white plumage is complemented by rusty-colored necks and heads. American Avocets nest in open areas near water, and they will vigorously defend their nests from predators. They have been known to use decoy nests to fool predators, and will also perform distraction displays to lure predators away from the nest site. This was a rare sighting at Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan.
