This image depicts several characteristics of woodpeckers in general and red-bellied woodpeckers in particular. The long, pointed tongue has a sticky substance which facilitates removing insects from holes in trees. Although most birds have three toes pointing forward and one pointing back, as shown in this image, woodpeckers have zygodactyl feet with two toes pointing forward and two pointing back. This arrangement of toes, in addition to the stiffened tail feathers, helps woodpeckers perch on vertical surfaces.
