Large irruptions of Evening Grosbeaks often occur in the Willamette Valley in spring. After a hard, cold winter in 2011-12, the grosbeaks were looking for food. At the end of May 2011, a flock of Evening Grosbeaks found our backyard feeders and took over the tray feeder for a week or so, a good opportunity to get some close-up photos of these gorgeous birds with the heavy-duty beaks. This female Evening Grosbeak perched on the head of the iron bird at the top of our feeder pole was the first of flock to show up. Shot using a Nikon D300 camera with a Nikkor 300 mm lens from the back porch of our home.
