Brown Thrasher, Georgia’s State Bird
This was a close encounter with our yard-boss. Brown Thrashers are known aggressive nesting territory protectors. They will strike dogs, cats, and humans. They have a fierce look and they mean it.
Their downfall is that Brown-headed Cowbirds seem to have figured out that the Thrashers are great nest protectors and parents. Brown Thrashers are the largest common host of parasitic Brown-headed Cowbirds. They are also very susceptible to the loss of their shrub habitat and pesticides. All combined their numbers have declined 41% since the 1960s. This is a real shame because Brown Thrashers are among our most accomplished songsters. They are often the morning chorus show stealer. Their singing is often mistaken for their more cocky Mockingbird cousins.
