Blue Jays have tight family bonds. Pairs mate for life and are team parents. The youngsters can spend up to a couple of months learning from parents how to become independent. After that it is somewhat a mystery of why some individuals remain local & some, maybe up to 20%, migrate, making them the only New World jay to migrate north & south. Here’s a juvenile enjoying their growing independence.
BTW: This was taken in our front yard. We have rewilded the whole yard & welcome the wildlife to join us in the ‘front yard’. It’s no longer reserved for manicured lawn.
