The Elf Owl, North America’s smallest owl, stands only 5 inches tall and weighs a mere 14 ounces. It winters in Mexico and then migrates “to nesting grounds in the southern parts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas,” Tekiela writes. “These tiny raptors usually lay eggs and raise their families in old woodpecker cavities. Often an Elf Owl cavity will be in a small tree or saguaro cactus.”
