Photos of the day: October 1-15, 2020

Every day on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, we share a photo of the day — a superb image from more than 20,000 pictures in our Reader Galleries. The shots we selected in the first half of October 2020 included a fantastic portrait of a Sandhill Crane, a Black-crowned Night-Heron with a fish, a close-up of an Allen’s Hummingbird, and more!

Male House Finches get their red color from pigment in their food during molt. The more pigment in the food, the redder the birds will appear. Jim Baker spotted this one at a feeder in his backyard in Arvada, Colorado.
