Photos of the day: March 16-31, 2021

Every day on FacebookInstagram, and Twitter, we share a photo of the day — a superb image from the more than 20,000 pictures in our Reader Galleries. Our selections from the second half of March 2021 included photos of a thirsty Fish Crow, a pair of Barred Owls, an up-close portrait of a flicker, and more.

Ireland doesn’t have an official national bird, but in 1990, the Irish Wildlife Conservancy said it should be the Northern Lapwing. Irish ornithologist Frank King explained a few years ago that its colors roughly mirror those in Ireland’s flag: “From a distance it looks black and white but closer inspection shows a shimmering green iridescence and a snowy white breast, augmented by a buff-colored blaze beneath the tail that might, at a stretch, be described as orange.”
