Photos of the day: January 1-15, 2021

Every day on FacebookInstagram, and Twitter, we share a photo of the day — a superb image from more than 20,000 pictures in our Reader Galleries. The photos we selected in the first half of January 2021 included a Snowy Owl in flight, a “consoling moment” between two Black Vultures, a portrait of a Townsend’s Warbler, and more.

Black Vultures by Linn Smith

Black Vultures by Linn Smith

Linn Smith watched these Black Vultures last February near Lake Jessup in Oviedo, Florida. She said a flock of Black Vultures had been feeding on a fish and one bird was forced out of the group for taking too many bites. “A mate or a close associate came over to the chastised vulture and tried to console it by wrapping its wings over its body,” Linn writes. “It was an extremely touching and moving moment, and I felt very fortunate to have captured it.”
