Every day on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, we share a photo of the day — a superb image from more than 20,000 pictures in our Reader Galleries. The shots we selected in the second half of December 2020 included a portrait of a Red-bellied Woodpecker, images of both crossbill species, and a “posing” Cooper’s Hawk.

White-winged Crossbills and Red Crossbills are among the so-called winter finches that make irregular movements in winter in search of good cone crops. We’re witnessing an irruption of winter finches this winter, including grosbeaks, crossbills, and siskins. White-winged Crossbill has been reported as far south as North Carolina while Red has been seen as far south as Alabama. David Mundy spotted this White-winged Crossbill at Fish Creek Park in Calgary, Alberta, in 2017.
