Every day on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, we share a photo of the day — a superb image from the more than 20,000 pictures in our Reader Galleries. Our selections from the second half of August 2021 included a snapshot of a Red-tailed Hawk, a Pink-footed Goose sighting, an adorable photo of a female Red-breasted Merganser with her ducklings, and more!

Found in a cattle pond near a small town in Henry County, Illinois, this Black-bellied Whistling-Duck walked perfectly into Cassie Dahl's view. - The species is native from southern Texas and Arizona south to Argentina. In recent years, it has been turning up regularly in the central and eastern U.S., and this year, reports have come from as far north as central North Dakota and New Brunswick.
