Gallery of raptors in flight

We’re in the midst of raptor migration in North America, so we thought it would be useful to share photos of hawks, falcons, and other birds of prey in flight. Scroll through the gallery below to view images of raptors that you’re likely to see in fall, especially if you visit a hawk watch.

If you want to find a hawk watch near you, here’s a list of 18 sites, or take a look at, which is operated by the Hawk Migration Association of North America. It offers counts of raptors updated daily at active hawk-watching sites.

"Eastern" Red-tailed Hawk

One of the most common North American raptors. Various plumages and subspecies. This is the widespread Eastern form, featuring a white throat with a dark collar, dark "patagial marks" on the front of the wings, and a rufous tail. Photo by Robert Visconti
