In early spring, White-tailed Ptarmigan begin to turn to their summer plumage, creating a striking contrast to the still winter-like conditions above tree line in the Colorado Rockies. Peter Ismert took the photo in late May 2021 in the Vasquez Peak Wilderness, Arapaho National Forest.
