“The photo was taken on March 25, 2017, at Gulf State Pier in Gulf Shores, Alabama,” writes Laura Vines. “This is a fishing pier, and pelicans, herons, and other waterbirds hang out on and near the pier because of the fishing activity. This is one of the fairly rare blue-eyed pelicans that come around, and I was struck by the richness of his coloring and his striking eyes!”

Equipment and settings: Canon Rebel T2i, using a 55-250mm zoom lens. ISO 200, f/9, 1/325 speed.
