Earlier this year, we invited photographers to submit their best work for consideration in the 2020 BirdWatching Photography Awards Contest. More than 1,230 photos poured in, from hundreds of contestants. Over the last few weeks, the judges combed through the entries, and now, we are ready to announce the finalists and the honorable mention images. Next week, we’ll reveal the three winners.
The following slideshow features the 17 honorable mention photos, including images of Anna’s Hummingbird, Great Gray and Great Horned Owls, young Roseate Spoonbills, a Sunbittern in Brazil, and more. Please enjoy!

Description: This beautiful wading bird is found along rivers and swamp areas in South and Central America. It is not uncommon to see lurking in the shadows and along the edge of a river. It is very uncommon to see one in flight. They are fast fliers, and they prefer to walk away from a disturbance rather than fly. The pattern on the wing gives this bird a magical appearance.
Gear and Settings: Canon EOS-1D X Mark II, f/5.6, 1/1000 sec., ISO-1250, 400mm, no flash.
