2020 BirdWatching Photography Awards Contest honorable mentions

Earlier this year, we invited photographers to submit their best work for consideration in the 2020 BirdWatching Photography Awards Contest. More than 1,230 photos poured in, from hundreds of contestants. Over the last few weeks, the judges combed through the entries, and now, we are ready to announce the finalists and the honorable mention images. Next week, we’ll reveal the three winners.

The following slideshow features the 17 honorable mention photos, including images of Anna’s Hummingbird, Great Gray and Great Horned Owls, young Roseate Spoonbills, a Sunbittern in Brazil, and more. Please enjoy!

Neotropic Cormorant

Neotropic Cormorant

Photographer: Marc Alter

Location and date: Delray Beach, Florida, March 9, 2020.

Description: While visiting my daughter in Florida, I took some time for myself to bird at Wakodahatchee Wetlands. Part of Florida's wastewater-treatment system, Wakodahatchee is a marshy area that provides hundreds of birds a safe breeding habitat. Excited to see so many birds in one area, I barely noticed it started raining when I spotted this Cormorant standing on a branch. Knowing these birds can be very fast, I was able to grab this quick shot just before it dove into the water for a fish.

Gear and settings: Nikon D850, handheld, ISO 2000, f/8.0, 1/640 sec, -0.3 stops.
