Earlier this year, we invited photographers to submit their best work for consideration in the 2020 BirdWatching Photography Awards Contest. More than 1,230 photos poured in, from hundreds of contestants. Over the last few weeks, the judges combed through the entries, and now, we are ready to announce the finalists and the honorable mention images. Next week, we’ll reveal the three winners.
The following slideshow features the 17 honorable mention photos, including images of Anna’s Hummingbird, Great Gray and Great Horned Owls, young Roseate Spoonbills, a Sunbittern in Brazil, and more. Please enjoy!

Description: A pair of Great Horned Owls have nested every year in our neighborhood. Last year, they had four owlets. When the owls were about 8 weeks old, I got up early one morning to photograph them while they were still active. I took great care to not disturb the owls or their parents who were roosting nearby. I got several photos, and I love this photo as it showed four distinctly different expressions on each of the young owls’ faces.
