"While visiting a Lake Michigan beach in Manistee, Michigan, I saw a Sanderling approaching," says Roger Hagerman. "I lay down on the beach, getting as flat as possible, until I was at eye level with the Sanderling. I shaped some sand into a small mound and rested my wrists on top for use as a tripod while holding my camera, The sun was low in the sky an hour and a half before sunset, providing perfect nature light. The Sanderling continued feeding, slowly meandering near the water's edge toward me, while I photographed it."

Equipment and settings: Canon EOS 7D Mark II, Canon 100-400mm 4.5-5.6 L II USM lens. ISO 800, 400mm, f/5.6, 1/8000. Edit in Lightroom.

Many thanks to our panel of guest judges: our Founding Editor and “Amazing Birds” columnist Eldon Greij; author, radio host, and Contributing Editor Laura Erickson; and Outdoor Photographer Editor Wes Pitts.
