"In Inwood Hill Park, at the very northern tip of Manhattan in New York City, I spotted this Great Egret preening itself in an eye-level tree," writes Robert Katz. "The egret was very accommodating as I managed to grab several up-close shots, bringing out the detail in the bird's beautiful plumes and sharp bill. Photographing urban birds is extremely rewarding, as many species that are usually skittish, like this egret, are more accustomed to foot-traffic and provide great photographic opportunities."

Equipment and settings: Canon EOS Rebel T5, Tamron SP 150-600mm lens. f/5-6.3. ISO 200; 600mm; f/6.3; shutter speed 1/250.

Many thanks to our panel of guest judges: our Founding Editor and “Amazing Birds” columnist Eldon Greij; author, radio host, and Contributing Editor Laura Erickson; and Outdoor Photographer Editor Wes Pitts.
