We received more than 1,000 submissions to our 2019 Bird Portrait Contest, and now, after combing through the entries, we’re excited to announce the results.
The following slideshow displays our 15 honorable mention images, including photos of Brown Pelican, Anna’s Hummingbird, and Green Jay, plus three great shots of Anhinga. Enjoy!

Description: I feel so lucky to live in San Diego, California! On any given weekend, there are numerous places to photograph amazing birds, from hummingbirds to Bald Eagles. One of my favorite locations is La Jolla, and first thing in the morning it is Goldfish Point, where you can find many pelicans, cormorants and gulls. If you arrive early enough, you may even get to watch the pelicans perform their head throw before heading out for breakfast. This Brown Pelican was just waking up for the day when he noticed he had an admirer.
Gear and settings: Canon EOS 5D Mark IV; EF100-400mm ƒ /4.5-5.6L IS USM lens; 1/250 sec at ƒ/10; ISO 1600; Handheld
