Hundreds of American white pelicans nest at Anaho Island National Wildlife Refuge, an uninhabited 600+ acre island in Pyramid Lake. The lake is contained entirely within the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation, located about 30 miles northeast of Reno, Nevada. There is no public access to the island, which provides excellent nesting opportunities for the pelicans, herons, egrets, cormorants, gulls and terns. In the spring the pelicans rise up in great swirling clouds and seek food for the nestlings. One of their favorite fishing spots is below a dam where fish gather. This pelican landed in the churning water, likely hoping for an easy meal.
