Birds in Flight 2022
Birds in Flight 2022 Contest Winners

Grand Prize : Steve Large
Title: Yellow-rumped Warbler
First place in our 2022 Birds in Flight Contest goes to Steve Large of Nanaimo, British Columbia, for this tack-sharp image of a Yellow-rumped Warbler, wings spread and tail flared. Steve took the photo in May 2022 at Oliver Woods Marsh in Nanaimo. The bird had just caught a bug, and Steve took the image as the bird banked before landing close to him in a tree.
“This image was one of a sequence of several shots taken at 30 frames per second,” he says. “No matter what the body position of the bird, it will always try to keep its head level and focused on where it wants to land.”
He used a Sony a1 with a 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 lens. Exposure data: 1/4000 @ f/6.3, ISO 2000.

Second Prize: Ed Hughes
Title: Osprey
Ed Hughes of Keystone Heights, Florida, wins second place in our 2022 Birds in Flight Contest with this remarkable image of an Osprey flying with not one but two fish in its claws. Ed took the photo at a lake in Rhode Island in May 2022. “I’ve been photographing Osprey for years,” he says, “and I can count on one hand the times I’ve seen this.”
The relative rarity of the sighting and the dramatic action — the bird’s stare and the water spraying around it — earned lots of attention from the judges.
Ed used a Nikon D850 camera body and a 600mm f/4 lens. Exposure data: 1/2500 @ f/4.0, ISO 900.

Third Prize: Rebecca DePorte
Title: Barred Owl
Third place in our 2022 Birds in Flight Contest goes to Rebecca DePorte of Princeton, New Jersey. In mid-April 2022, Rebecca was observing a Barred Owl at Blue Cypress Lake in Vero Beach, Florida.
“Suddenly three Common Grackles appeared and began flying at the owl,” she says. “At first, the owl sat still and refused to give up its perch, but after four grackle attacks, it began shifting its position and looking across the lake. I raised my camera and started taking photos just as it took off out of the tree. To my amazement, one of the grackles had landed on the owl’s back and, carrying its meal, an anole lizard, appeared to be hitching a ride across the lake with the owl.”
The grackles were mobbing the owl — a behavior in which smaller birds gang up on larger owls and raptors to drive them away from nests or other sensitive sites. Rebecca won third place with the image, a terrific illustration of mobbing behavior.
She took the photo with a Nikon Z 9 and a 500mm f/5.6 lens. Exposure data: 1/3200 @ f/8.0, ISO 12,800, exposure compensation +0.33.

Question: Who may enter?
Contest is open to individuals over the age of 18 and residents of the U.S. and Canada, excluding Quebec.
Question: How do I enter?
Click “Submit Your Images”. You’ll need to be logged in to your BirdWatching account to enter. If you don’t have an account, click here to register for your free account.
Question: Can I submit pictures of captive birds, i.e. in zoos, aviaries, parks (i.e. Disney), pets, or do they have to be of wild birds only?
We will only consider submissions of wild birds. Please do not enter photos of captive birds.
Question: In what format should I submit my photos?
Each photograph must be submitted in .JPG format and cannot exceed 5 MB in size. Also, make sure your photo is in the sRGB color space, or else your image may look discolored.
Question: How many photos may I enter?
There is no limit to the amount of photos you may enter.
Question: How much does it cost to enter?
Until June 28, 2022, you can enter your images at the early entry price of $30 for one (1) image and $50 for two (2) images. After June 28, one (1) image costs $40 and two (2) images cost $65 until the end of the contest on July 12, 2022.
Question: Is my credit card information secure?
Absolutely! The payment form is hosted on our secure payment processor’s site and your credit card information (including your physical address) is submitted directly to the applicable credit card company through 256-bit encrypted pages. The header graphic is the only non-secure item on the payment page and only your email and the success/failure message of the transaction are submitted back to our site.
Question: Can I pass the word on this competition to my friends, classmates, Facebook/Twitter followers, etc.?
Yes, please! The link to the contest portal is https://www.birdwatchingdaily.com/photo-contests/birds-in-flight/
Question: Do I have to print or mail in my photos?
No. Please upload entries using the online entry form. Mailed submissions will not be accepted.
Question: Can I process my photos using Photoshop or another image-processing program?
Yes, but keep digital processing to a minimum. Acceptable adjustments include color balance, contrast, dust spotting, and sharpening. Do not digitally retouch your images to alter reality. Do not remove distracting elements such as foreground branches or clean up cluttered backgrounds. Do not add to the foreground or background. We are assuming that your digital image reflects what your camera recorded at the moment you made the picture.
Question: Can I watermark my photos?
While we prefer you do not use watermarks on your submitted images because they can muddle the judging process, we understand that you want to protect your work. You may use a small watermark in the corner of your image, but we ask that you refrain from using a substantial watermark that covers a large portion of your photograph.
Question: When will the winners be notified?
By January 31, 2023.
Question: When will the winners be announced?
The winners’ photos will be published in a special multi-spread feature in a future issue of BirdWatching magazine. Exact issue, month, and year will be communicated to the winners. All winners will be announced online by January 31, 2023.

Additionally, title your photos with alphanumeric characters only. Please don’t use apostrophes, ampersands or any other character symbol, as doing so may cause errors during uploading.

BirdWatching’s 2022 Birds in Flight Photo Contest (“Contest”) is open only to individuals who are over 18 years of age and who are residents of the U.S. and Canada (excluding Quebec). Employees of Madavor Media, LLC, (“Sponsors”), and their respective parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, and advertising and promotion agencies, and their immediate family members (spouse, parent, child and sibling and their respective spouses, regardless of where they reside) and/or those living in same household of each, whether or not related, are not eligible to participate or win. Sponsors reserve the right to verify all eligibility requirements. Contest is subject to all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
Qualified Entries
Entries must be a single image as captured by the camera, with adjustments limited to standard photo processing such as color and exposure adjustments and basic retouching such as spot removal or noise reduction. Images must not be “composite images” that combine subjects or elements from different scenes—replacing a background or sky, for example. Exceptions include the use of HDR exposure stacking, focus stacking or similar techniques used for a single composition where the camera was not moved. As part of the judging process, our judges at their discretion may request the original RAW file capture for review.
BirdWatching is committed to ethical practices in wildlife photography. If your image contains wildlife, the following types of photographs are considered ineligible for entry in this contest:
- Images that appear to be the result of “baiting”
- Images that indicate the wildlife subject is “harassed” or crowded
- Close-up images of nests using a wide-angle lens
- Images taken at “game farms.” Images of captive wildlife must be identified as such and the facility at which they were taken must be noted. The contest judges reserve the right to disqualify images that, in their sole discretion, appear to be the result of questionable practices, as defined by, but not limited to, those described above.

The Sponsors reserve the right, in their sole discretion, to disqualify any entry they deem to be offensive, inappropriate, that is not in keeping with Sponsors’ image or that is otherwise not in compliance with the terms of these Official Rules. Entrant must have obtained express written consent to submit any entry that contains persons other than entrant or third-party elements not owned by entrant and, if requested to do so, produce such written consent from appropriate parties in a form and manner acceptable to the Sponsors.

GRAND PLACE PRIZE JUDGING:
One (1) potential Grand Place Prize winner, one (1) potential Second Place winner, one (1) potential Third Place winner, and up to twenty-five (25) potential Finalists will be determined from among all eligible entries received by a panel of qualified judges, based equally on the following criteria: Adherence to Theme, Composition and Creativity/Originality (“Judging Criteria”). The entrants who submitted the entry receiving the highest scores, as determined by the Sponsors in their sole discretion, will be the potential winners and finalists respectively.
In the event of a tie for any prize, an additional “tie-breaking” judge will determine the applicable winner or finalists from among those tied using the Criteria. The Sponsors reserve the right to not award any prize if, in their sole discretion, an insufficient number of eligible and qualified entries are received. Decisions of the Sponsors and judges are final and binding.
