Imagine my delight to see not one but two yellow-bellied sapsuckers, on their annual migration, drinking the sap from our birch trees. It wasn’t clear whether these were a mating pair, but they loved the sap. Although I kept my distance, they knew I was there and would move around the tree to be out of sight. I tried to follow them without scaring them away. Ultimately they returned to the front of the tree, and posed nicely for one shot.
