While riding through the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, NWR, CO I came upon this Swainson's Hawk in the process of devouring its prey, a cottontail rabbit. The hawk took a few minutes to catch its breath, and then began enjoying its feast. I took several shots and then left the bird to dine alone. Swainson's return to the West and Midwest each spring, to breed and raise their young. They arrive here in Denver around April and depart for South America in September. They are my favorite hawk.
